PLEASANT CORNERS – Champlain Township recently held a seminar for business owners called, “Surviving in business in challenging economic times”.

The seminar took place at Champlain Township’s council chambers on Pleasant Corner Road and included a presentation by Lynn Groulx, an economic development officer with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.

Groulx gave a presentation about the new consumer, changing buying patterns, the trading up phenomenon and talked about handling the challenges facing small businesses in small communities.

Geneviève Bougie, a project officer with the Prescott-Russell Community Development Corporation talked about the various funding initiatives to assist small business and not-for-profit groups.

Funding is available to small businesses for employee training, for hiring youth interns, for business development (marketing plans, feasibility studies, research), for skills development and for access to capital.

Not-for-profit organizations can obtain funding of up to $10,000 for local initiatives and from $10,000 to $35,000 for community capacity building.
